Tips for choosing the best product for your dropshipping store

Tips for choosing the best product for your dropshipping store

If you are interested in the dropshipping business, your first task is to find top dropshipping products (or niches) for a further successful and profitable business. You must find a niche that is not yet occupied, or that has a low or medium level of competition.

There are several tips that will help you to determine the success of the products you are going to sell.

Narrow specialization

The product that you want to sell and therefore make money from the sale should be highly specialized. That is, your audience should be a specific group of people, not the masses. For example, “Electronic appliances” is a category that is difficult to call highly specialized. To make it so, you can allocate a subcategory of “Gadgets”. But it is also not too narrow. Moving on. “Wireless headphones” is what you need to attract a certain category of buyers.

Important note: your niche should not be seasonal and fluctuate over time.

Let’s assume that you’ve decided on a niche. Now your task is to check its relevance. How do you do that? You can use Google Trends – a tool that works on the principle of Google search. It allows you to find out the frequency of your search query in different countries and in different languages. Enter the query “wireless headphones” and you will get detailed statistics.

You also need to know who your audience is: their gender, age, location, interests. If we are talking about “wireless headphones”, the targeting parameters, for example, on Facebook should be as follows:

  • location: Canada
  • age: 16+
  • gender: male/female
  • interests: technology, gadgets, music

Why is it so important to focus on a highly specialized product? Why not sell several categories for different customers? First, your store will target customers with relevant interests. Second, the product will be easier to sell.

But there’s a downside to this: if a niche isn’t generating profit, you’ll have to change it completely. However, you can switch to another niche at any time and that’s okay.

Weight and size of the product

The product you choose to sell should not be fragile and large, as this can cause shipping problems. The larger the product, the more difficult it is to transport. The same applies to fragile goods. Also, if you have an idea to sell furniture or interior decor, it fails in advance.

For one thing, the furniture is large in size, and the cost of shipping can be as much as half of its price. Secondly, it is difficult for a person to make a choice because he or she does not understand what he or she is ordering. When a person comes to an offline furniture store, he or she can feel it, try it out, assess it visually. Accordingly, it is easier for him or her to make a choice.

Copyright compliance

If you’re selling branded products, you run the risk of copyright infringement. It’s different when you’re buying from an authorized dealer. Be sure to consider this point, because it’s a very big risk.

Healthy competition

Many people believe that a niche in dropshipping should be unique and free of competition. But if there is no competition in the market for your chosen product, it means that no one is interested in it. Competition should always be there. It is an essential part of the business. But on the other hand, be careful not to choose an oversaturated niche where unfair competition is not uncommon.

The product must be interesting for you

It is desirable to choose a niche that will be interesting and familiar to you. It is better to sell a low-demand product that you know well and arouses interest than a popular product about which you have heard for the first time.

Mistakes when choosing a product for dropshipping business

Among the most common mistakes when choosing the best dropshipping products are:

  • The choice of products of mass purpose (in this case you can not withstand the competition).
  • Frequent changes in the niche (if the product does not bring profit, it must be changed, but to do it too often fraught with losses).
  • Race to the price (in an effort to earn more, do not hurry to inflate the price tag).

Among the mistakenly chosen products are branded products, oversized products, products requiring certificates, porcelain/clay/glass products.
